Spread offense influences All-Ozarks

High school football was different in 2007.

The spread had its influence on the Ozarks landscape with offensive numbers skyrocketing because of more plays (because of more passing).

The defense had something to say about the spread, taking great athletes to slow it down.

The spread helped Waynesville win a state championship. The Tigers and the Glendale Falcons both landed four players apiece on the 2007 All-Ozarks team — they both ran the spread.

But regardless of offensive scheme, here are the playmakers, your 2007 All-Ozarks team.

2007 All-Ozarks football first team offense: (From left): Aaron Cruz, Waynesville; Harrison Menke, Joplin; L.J. Fort, Waynesville; Alex Olive, Glendale; Kevin Redmon, Glendale; Alex Sanders, Glendale; Chris Young, Waynesville; Ryne Armstrong, Ozark; Zak Porath, Carl Junction; Deonta Wade, Lebanon; Layton Metcalf, Marionville. Not pictured: Landon Zerkel, Webb City.

Quarterback

Kevin Redmon

Glendale junior

In his first year as a starter, Redmon took the spread offense and his big receivers. As accurate as a passer in the state (177-for-308, 57.5 percent), Redmon led the Ozarks in passing and the Falcons to a second consecutive district championship.

Stats

177-for-308 passing, 2,413 yards, 17 touchdowns and 6 interceptions

Running backs

L.J. Fort

Waynesville senior

The backbone of the Class 5 state champions on both offense and defense, Fort is as tenacious as they come. He ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the championship game, a function of less carries early on in the season. But as good as he is running the ball, he'll probably play linebacker in college.

Stats

228 carries, 2,077 yards and 22 touchdowns

Layton Metcalf

Marionville senior

The next in a long line of Comet running backs, Metcalf fit into coach Terry Flannigan's versatile offense. Metcalf bided his time and was a big part of deep state runs as an underclassman, playing fullback. As the feature back, he also threw two touchdown passes.

Stats

239 carries, 2,016 yards and 24 touchdowns

Zak Porath

Carl Junction senior

One of the better multi-sport athletes in the Ozarks, Porath emerged as one of the more deceptive running backs around, benefiting from the Bulldogs' spread offense. He helped the Bulldogs to an 8-2 record, the team's best in a while.

Stats

234 carries, 1,780 yards and 19 touchdowns

Wide receivers

Alex Sanders

Glendale junior

Sanders is making a case for himself as one of the best receivers in the state. Already gaining all-state honors as a junior, Sanders led the Ozarks in receiving, taking advantage of his size (6-foot-5) and speed against smaller, slower defensive backs.

Stats

71 receptions, 1,171 yards and 12 touchdowns

Landon Zerkel

Webb City senior

Zerkel is a returning All-Ozarks player after earning honors as a defensive back last season. He's as explosive a player as there is, going over 100 yards in his last three games of the season.

Stats

41 receptions, 766 yards and 10 touchdowns

Offensive line

Alex Olive

Glendale senior

One of the bigger bodies around, Olive was as much a key to Glendale's spread offense as any of the skill players. The 6-foot-3, 275-pound Olive has been pursued by Division I schools and should take his aggressive play to the college game.

Honors

Second-team Missouri Football Coaches Association, first-team Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association, first team all-Ozark Conference

Deonta Wade

Lebanon senior

Wade, a two-time All-Ozarks lineman, helped block for an offense which rushed for more than 280 yards per game and averaged 26 points per game. Wade helped Lebanon to its first back-to-back non-losing seasons since 1992-93.

Harrison Menke

Joplin senior

Menke blocked for one of the more dynamic offenses in the Ozarks, showing his versatility by excelling at pass blocking and run blocking. Menke is being pursued by an array of colleges, including Missouri State.

Chris Young

Waynesville senior

While the allure of the spread offense usually insinuates a heavy dose of passing, Young and the rest of the offensive line showed they could run block with the best of them, leading the offense to two fourth-quarter touchdowns on the way to a Class 5 championship.

Honors

Ryne Armstrong

Ozark senior

Armstrong was the center of a good Ozark offensive line, which showed its mental and physical toughness during a deep playoff run. Armstrong helped the Ozark offense overcome deficits in the sectional and quarterfinal rounds and nearly pull off the upset over the eventual state champions.

Honors

Second-team Associated Press all-state, first-team Missouri Football Coaches Association, first-team all-Central Ozark Conference

Kicker

Aaron Cruz

Waynesville senior

Cruz showed he was worthy of all-state and All-Ozarks mention when he calmly nailed the field goal to give Waynesville a 3-0 halftime lead in the Class 5 championship game.

Stats

6-of-11 FGs and 33 extra points
