Rain
fell steadily, but the lightning stayed away as Monett,
Carl Junction and Webb City slugged it out
exhibition-style at the Monett football jamboree Friday
night.
Carl
Junction running back Zak Porath sparkled against both
jamboree opponents. Monett and Webb City also came away
with offensive highlights.
Perhaps
the most impressive showing came when the Carl Junction
offense squared off against the Webb City defense. The
Bulldogs quickly pieced together several key runs from
Porath and coupled those with a two pass completions to
score on their first two drives. |

On the
second drive, Porath scored from 35 yards out. He took a
handoff, faked out one defender, spun away from another Webb
City player and sprinted into the end zone untouched.
The
Cardinals stiffened with an intercepted pass in the end zone on
the Bulldogs’ third possession and didn’t allow another
score.
“Overall,
I thought our defense did a poor job tackling tonight,”
Cardinals coach John Roderique said. “I don’t know that the
weather had anything to do with it. I also thought our offense
could have done a better job, but it’s like I’ve told the
kids — there is really no way to see how good we are until we
are tested in a game-type situation like this.
Although
most offensive sets were vanilla, Monett confused both the
Bulldogs and the Cardinals with a varying number of shifts and
motions before the snap. The Cubs found the end zone against
both opponents.
There
were several dropped passes throughout the scrimmage, and
several others sailed wide of their targets. All three defenses
stepped up and managed to create stops on short-yardage
situations.
