Webb City wins regular season finale

The Cardinals improved to 21-1 for 2007 with a 4-1 home victory over Carl Junction.  The loss leaves the Bulldogs at 14-9 heading into next week's district play at Carl Junction.

 

Webb City scored one run each in both the first and second innings before Carl Junction's Zak Porath drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to pull the Bulldogs within 2-1.  Josh Clark grounded out to end the threat.

 

The Cardinals added another run in the fourth inning off of Bulldogs starter Chris Green, who pitched four strong innings allowing only four hits and one earned run.

 

Sophomore Jake Hale relieved Green to start the fifth and worked out of a bases-loaded jam after a Bulldogs error sandwiched between two walks.  Hale walked two more in the sixth inning and gave up Webb City's final run on a ground-rule double by the Cardinals' Mack Kyle.

 

Shane Moreland pitched six innings to earn the win for Webb City.  Senior David Ebbs worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the save.

 

The Cardinals' senior night was played in a light rain.  Carl Junction committed five errors during the contest, leading to two unearned runs.

 

Webb City stranded nine runners during the contest despite rapping only six hits against the Bulldogs hurlers.

 

When Carl Junction's Scott Thompson struck out on the game's final pitch, it was the 11th strikeout recorded by Webb City's pitchers.

 

The two compete in Class 3 District 12 action starting Monday at Carl Junction.  #1 Webb City, two-time defending state champions, play East Newton at 4:00 followed by #3 Carl Junction and Mount Vernon. 

 

Varsity knocks off Ft. Scott

Jake Hale struck out four and walked one en route to pitching a five-hitter against Fort Scott.  The Bulldogs prevailed 7-1 in the Saturday afternoon contest.

 

Zak Porath and Evan Clemons collected two hits apiece for Carl Junction, who went to 13-8 and will travel to Pittsburg, Kan., to play St. Mary’s-Colgan at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Mustangs whip CJ

McDonald County improved to 4-8 with a 9-1 non-conference victory over Carl Junction.

 

The game had been suspended last Friday at Carl Junction with the Mustangs leading 3-0 after 2 2/3 innings. It was finished at McDonald County because of field conditions.

 

The Mustangs’ winning pitcher was Kurt Williams. Fellow senior right-hander Matt Cole got the final two outs. Bo Bergen had started and struck out five at Carl Junction.

 

Jake Anderson finished with two hits and a two-run double, and Chris Price had a two-run double for McDonald County. Williams had two hits and one RBI.

 

For the Bulldogs, Zak Porath broke up the shutout with a solo homer, his third of the year. Scott Thompson added two hits for Carl Junction.

 

The loss was the Bulldogs' third in the past four games.

 

Carl Junction also lost the junior varsity game 4-2.  The JV now stands at 12-3. 

 

Bulldogs top Pittsburg

Zak Porath hit a two-run home run in the third inning to lead Carl Junction to a 2-1 victory over Pittsburg (KS) Monday.  The win moved the Bulldogs to 12-6 this season.

 

Carl Junction races past Nevada

The Bulldogs traveled to Nevada Monday and picked up a 6-3 win, moving to 11-5.

 

Drew Caruthers had three hits and three RBI as Carl Junction buried the Tigers with a fast start.

 

Carl Junction, which also received a triple from John Michel, scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the third before Nevada scored.

 

Chris Green threw a complete game for the Bulldogs, striking out seven and allowing five hits and four walks.

 

Nixa knocks off CJ 8-6

Carl Junction, playing their fourth game of the week, fell 8-6 to the Class 4 Nixa Eagles Friday.  The loss left the Bulldogs at 2-2 for the week, losing both of their non-conference games.

 

Four players had two hits apiece to spark Nixa against Carl Junction.

 

The Eagles getting the two hits were Tyler Christophel, Drew Ames, Nick Griffin and Cody Maynard.

 

Josh Clark led the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

 

Carl Junction (10-5) will travel to Nevada for a 4:30 p.m. game Monday.
